Stoolball is a sport that dates back to at least the 15th century, originating in Sussex. It may be an ancestor of cricket, baseball and rounders. In fact stoolball is sometimes called “Cricket in the air”. Traditionally it was played by milkmaids who used their milking stools as a wicket. It is similar to Twenty20 cricket, with 2 teams competing to score the most runs. The willow bat has a round face and a long sprung handle. The ball, small and hard, is bowled underarm.
